Rite of Passage - First Away Game
Taking the kids to the West Brom game so please mind your language.

I very rarely travel these days as time and spending money are not as plentiful as in my young free and single days and although amongst others I recall iconic visits to the Hawthorns in 79 (3rd round FA Cup) and 86 (penultimate league match) I cannot for the life of me remember my first away match. First home match yes but first away away match, no idea.

You?

1980 of course not 1979 (before it is pointed out to me) . 79/80 season but third round would have been in January.

Arsenal 82 or 3 I think. The one with the smoke bomb. I was in the arsenal end with my school mates as they were all arsenal

My folks had heard about the trouble at the ground, so when I got in I got bollocking for not giving them a ring (FROM A PHONE BOX PEOPLE!! REMEMBER THEM)
To let know know was ok.

Nick Hornby wrote about that match in Fever Pitch.

Don’t go that often now. Last one was the cup game against Spurs last season.

WIMBLEDON away in the FA cup 1984-85 season.

My first LEAGUE away game was against WATFORD shortly after. Lost 5-0. I think Colin WEST may have got an Eggbert.

I was also at the 1980 WBA game.. was with me dad andme Unc.... 1st away game was Arsenal v West Ham QF FA Cup 1975.... Dad managed to get two seats in the Arsenal stand... saying that it was more like a home game... I thought ALL away games were going to be like that... it pissed down all day but it never mattered a jolt

Re: Rite of Passage - First Away Game
First away game was against QPR in 1985. In fact, it was the first West Ham match I ever went to.

Eventful first match as Tom McAlister broke his ribs in the match and Ray Stewart went in goal!

Brave effort but lost 4-2.

Cottee with our two goals.

This match was good preparation for life as a West Ham fan. It's rarely been dull since.
